The cut-down is necessary to avoid interference with the gussets in the corner of the lifting part of the roof, but:- The cut-down flange compromises the "dam" created by the height of flange around the rest of the opening and significantly reduces the surface area for the Velcro in the corner which is the key area where the Velcro is under the most strain.- The cut-down flange also means there is little margin for error with the welds in that area. If the gasket had been installed with a tighter turn radius in the corners (moving the gasket further away from the opening) I think it would have worked well enough. Challenge yourself!
